This bully will be your worst nightmare. You could fight him but do you have a chance against someone who is untouchable?
The bully isn’t supposed to win.
Senior year was off to a rough start: lube in my locker, panties on my front porch, unimaginative name-calling. See, I got a player suspended from the football team for harassing me, and in my small Texas town, you don’t mess with the football players—even if they mess with you first.
I didn’t care if it was an unpopular thing to do; I stood up for myself… and in doing so, opened Pandora’s Box.
I never dreamed I would attract the attention of locally worshipped star quarterback, Carter Mahoney. Never imagined his coveted attention would turn out to be such a nightmare. Beneath his carefully constructed façade lurks a monster, a predator looking for the perfect prey to play with. Now, since I’m the girl no one likes or believes, I guess I’m the perfect target for his dark games and twisted desires.
After surviving my first encounter with his casual depravity, all I really want is for Carter to leave me alone.
But all he seems to want is me.
Warning: This book is provocative. It is categorized as DARK ROMANCE for a reason. It will not be for everyone. If you are a reader with certain triggers or sensitivities common to the dark romance genre, please heed the author’s note at the beginning of this book.
This is my first book by Sam Mariano and I have to say, it was truly worth the time. The book held me captive and I have to warn you: this is really not your easy and light bully romance.
The book contains violence and abuse that should have no place in a high school, so be careful. My review contains no major spoiler!
Our story begins with Zoey Ellis going up against a popular football player because he groped her. She fought until they finally – although reluctantly – she got justice from school and the player got suspended from the season. You know how it is with football in small towns… It is sacred so it resulted in some hatred and revulsion against Zoey and her family. Even her mother did not support her because she thought Zoey is going too far for a not-so-big crime.
But she wanted to save others from the same humiliation, wanted to teach the stupid jerk a lesson he never forgot. Oh yeah, he did not. Of course, now everybody is bullying Zoey, the school became a war zone so this shy little nerd is only praying for graduation and freedom.
The football team is not happy, the guy wants revenge so he gathers some friends and they corner Zoey into an empty classroom where she can get more than just groping. Carter Mahoney enters the picture, finds the girl amusing and unleashes his dark, twisted mind on her intending to make her really suffer. Doing things to her that is far-far worse than a mere groping, in front of his friends per se.
After this, Carter sets his claws into Zoey and prepares to make her life a living hell. Only the bully truly finds interest in her and in his own twisted ways try to court her and seduce her like normal guys. The problem? They really had a rough introduction and now Zoey knows better than to trust him. So she will release his inner beast one more time, with every “no” angering the monster more and more. Carter has his ways and he will do absolutely anything he wants because he can get away with it. He will not play nice and believe me when I say he is really your nightmare if he turns against you.
You can ask me. Then why should you read this book? Because every monster has a story. A beginning. Carter Mahoney is not always like that, but Zoey brings out a side of him even he did not know was hiding inside him. They say, if a boy is bullying you in he likes you.
What if the monster falls in love with you? What lengths would he go to get what he wants?
These characters and story truly is complicated, deep and quite the emotional ride. If you start out on it you have to be sure you would be able to finish because it will not release you anymore from its clutches. Carter Mahoney will bully you till you read his whole story. And it is worth the wild ride. It is a unique, one-of-a-kind love story that will haunt you for a very long time after you finish it. Bravo!
