Everybody has a dark past. And when that past catches up to you, you need a capable, strong man to protect you. Better if you have a whole ex-military family at your back…
A man who shoots first and asks questions later…
Most people would take an all-expenses-paid trip to the beach in a heartbeat. Garrett Kelly only accepts to keep tabs on Sarah Daniels, who’s in hiding after witnessing a murder by Marcus Lattimer, her half-brother—and a personal enemy of KGI. This gig may be beneath a disciplined soldier like Garrett, but if he gets a shot at Lattimer, it will all be worth it…
…and the ultimate moving target.
But Garrett hadn’t counted on falling for Sarah. He’d considered seduction as a tactical maneuver, but when he glimpses Sarah’s dark past, he feels an urgent desire to keep her safe—even after she disappears on him. Garrett doesn’t know exactly who, or what, Sarah’s running from, but whatever it is, she’s running for her life…
“My attitude is born out of necessity. I’ve made mistakes. I’ve made decisions I regretted. I know what it’s like to live with regret. I live with it everyday. But if I let it take over, I’d never get out of bed in the morning.”
The job is easy. Woo a key witness, keep her safe and do everything that is necessary to flush out her big bad brother. But whatever happens, do not fall for her. That would surely complicate things.
When did any of the Kelly brothers listen to any warning? Garrett is recovering from a wound he got when he protected Sophie. So, this job gives him an easy job with the opportunity to get revenge on Marcus Lattimer also. The perfect assignment. Or not. Garrett soon realizes there is more to Sarah than he first bound to believe. Sarah had some dark things in her past that she cannot just overcome. And if Garrett wants her to open up to him he needs to be honest. But can he do that?
Sarah is used to being led on by the men in her life. Trust is a fragile thing. So she will not give it easy. When that trust shatters, she has to make a decision and disappear for good. Again. Even if it is hard with Garrett wanting to keep her close.
“As what-the-fuck moments went, this one was one of the bigger ones.”
What I really loved in this story, that it was so realistic in both characters and story. I hate to repeat myself, but I cannot voice this any other way. Spoiler alert ahead: Sarah got raped then witnessed her brother kill that man. Did he deserve it? Absolutely. But Sarah does not want to testify against her brother, so she is going into hiding. Although she is falling for Garrett, making love is not easy for her after the rape. Garrett has to take things slowly, ease her into it, earn her trust in this sensitive matter. Even after years of being together, the past comes back to haunt Sarah and I think this is truly fascinating.
I thought I cannot love the Kelly family more, but I can. Their jesting, their closeness is everything that you can wish for. Perfect family? Hell no. But they can truly represent something beyond a great family.
